AMSU-B Observations of Mixed-Phase Clouds over Land

چکیده
Measurements from passive microwave satellite instruments such as the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit B (AMSU-B) are sensitive to both liquid and ice cloud particles. Radiative transfer modeling is exploited to simulate the response of the AMSU-B instrument to mixed-phase clouds over land. The plane-parallel radiative transfer model employed for the study accounts for scattering and absorption from cloud ice as well as absorption and emission from trace gases and cloud liquid. The radiative effects of mixed-phase clouds on AMSU-B window channels (i.e., 89 and 150 GHz) and water vapor line channels (i.e., 183 1, 3, and 7 GHz) are studied. Sensitivities to noncloud parameters, including surface temperature, surface emissivity, and atmospheric temperature and water vapor profiles, are also quantified. Modeling results indicate that both cloud phases generally have significant radiative effects and that the 150and 183 7-GHz channels are typically the most sensitive channels to integrated cloud properties (i.e., liquid water path and ice water path). However, results also indicate that AMSU-B measurements alone are probably insufficient for retrieving all mixed-phase cloud properties of interest. These results are supported by comparisons of AMSU-B observations of a mixed-phase cloud over the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) site with corresponding calculated clear-sky values.

Classification of hydrometeors using microwave brightness temperature data from AMSU-B over Iran
The Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B (AMSU-B) installed on the NOAA-15, 16, and 17 satellites, is the new generation of a series of microwave imagers/sounders that can sense atmospheric moisture and other hydrometeors through clouds. This paper demonstrates the potential of multi-frequency AMSU-B data for classifying different types of hydrometeors. Ten types of these hydrometers have been co...

[1] Near-global analysis of 183 GHz measurements from the NOAA-15 advanced microwave sounding unit (AMSU) B was conducted to investigate the impact of cold (< 240 K at 11 mm) clouds on upper tropospheric humidity (UTH) observations and in assessing the potential for deriving cloud microphysical properties. Collocated advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) data aided in identifying clo...

[1] Methods to detect tropical deep convective clouds and convective overshooting from measurements at the three water vapor channels (183.3 ± 1, 183.3 ± 3, and 183.3 ± 7 GHz) of the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B (AMSU-B) are presented. Thresholds for the brightness temperature differences between the three channels are suggested as criterion to detect deep convective clouds, and an order ...
متن کاملLAND SURFACE EMISSIVITY ESTIMATION AT 89 AND 150 GHz FROM AMSU-B MEASUREMENTS
Most of the works on estimation of land surface emissivity from satellite radiometric measurements are performed at the frequencies d 100 GHz in the past two decades [1-3]. In the frequency range of AMSU-B (89-183 GHz) the land surface emissivity problems draw attention from scientific community recently mainly because of difficulty associated with precipitation retrievals over land. For liquid...
متن کاملComparison of AIRS and AMSU-B monthly mean estimates of upper tropospheric humidity
Satellite-borne measurements provide valuable information on the global distribution of upper tropospheric humidity (UTH), which represents the mean relative humidity in a layer approximately enclosed by the atmospheric pressure levels 500 and 200 hPa. Monthly mean distributions of microwave observations of UTH obtained from the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B (AMSU-B) and the Humidity Sound...
